Calories Left at a Glance: What You Can Still Eat
Halfway through the day, the useful question is how much you can still eat. One number answers it: your calorie target minus what you have logged. PlateLens now leads with that number on Home, in the Diary, on the web and on Apple Watch, and calories eaten are one tap away.
Why calories left come first
A ring that reads 1,240 of 2,000 kcal is accurate, but it leaves the subtraction to you. Many people tapped the ring to find what was left, or did the math in their heads before dinner. One figure, 760 kcal left, answers the question directly, and it is the number you plan the next meal with.
What you see on Home and in the Diary
On Home, the Calories gauge and the calorie ring on the Nutrition card show what is left of today's target:
- 760 kcal left while you are under your target;
- 320 kcal over once you go above it, shown in red;
- Right on target when what you have eaten matches your target exactly.
The ring keeps what you have eaten and your target beneath the figure, and the macro gauges keep their percentages. In the Diary, the Day view shows what was left of each day's own target, while Week, Month and Year keep showing what you ate and its averages.
The same answer on every screen
On iPhone, the Calories Left widget and the calorie Live Activity already showed what was left. Now Home, the Diary, the web app and Apple Watch say the same thing, in the same words. On the web, the Calories gauge and the Where you stand summary on Today lead with what is left; on Apple Watch, so do the Calories gauge and its complication.
Prefer calories eaten? Switch back in one tap
Tap the pie chart icon to the left of + on the Nutrition card to switch Home between calories left and calories eaten. The same choice is in More → Preferences → Show calories left on mobile, and in Settings → Language and units → Show calories as on the web. With calories eaten, the Calories gauge shows your daily percentage, like the macro gauges.
The choice is saved to your account, so your phone, the web app and Apple Watch follow it. On iPhone, the Calories Left widget and the calorie Live Activity keep showing what is left, whichever you choose. The Customize Home guide covers the details, including the Diary and when the watch face updates.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an app that shows how many calories I have left today?
PlateLens shows it on Home by default: the Calories gauge and the calorie ring subtract what you have logged from your daily target, for example 760 kcal left, 320 kcal over or Right on target. The same figure appears in the Diary's Day view, on the web app and on Apple Watch, and on iPhone the Calories Left widget and the calorie Live Activity show it outside the app.
How do I switch back to calories eaten?
Tap the pie chart icon to the left of + on the Nutrition card on Home, or turn off Show calories left in More → Preferences. On the web, open Settings → Language and units and choose Consumed under Show calories as. The choice is saved to your account, so mobile, web and Apple Watch follow it.
Does showing calories left change my target or my meals?
Only the display changes. Your calorie target, the meals you have logged and your history stay as they are, and you can switch between calories left and calories eaten as often as you like.
What do the Diary and Apple Watch show?
The Diary's Day view follows your choice and measures each day against its own target, while Week, Month and Year keep showing what you ate and its averages. On Apple Watch, the Calories gauge and its complication follow the same choice; the watch face switches at its next refresh, or as soon as you open PlateLens on the Watch.
Why do the widgets always show calories left?
They are built around that question. The Calories Left widget and the calorie Live Activity show how much you can still eat without opening the app, whichever option you choose for Home, the Diary, the web and Apple Watch.
